A dental website checklist: what patients look for first

This dental website checklist is what I work through when I plan a site for a practice. Use it to check the site you have now, or hand it to whoever builds your next one.

Start with the booking button

Picture someone with a cracked tooth on a Saturday morning. They're on their phone, they're in pain, and they want to book or call. If your booking button is hidden in a menu, they'll go back to Google and try the next practice.

Put "Book an appointment" in the header, where a thumb can reach it, and repeat it on every treatment page. If you use online booking software, link straight to the booking screen rather than to a page that explains how to book. Make the phone number tap-to-call as well. Plenty of patients would rather speak to a person, especially when something hurts.

Make emergencies obvious

Out-of-hours information is easy to forget and badly missed when it isn't there. Say plainly what someone should do if they need help tonight or at the weekend, and give them a number. One short paragraph near the top of the homepage is enough.

Give each treatment its own page

A single "Treatments" page listing twenty procedures doesn't help anyone. Your main treatments deserve their own pages, from check-ups and hygiene to implants and aligners. On each one, explain what happens and how long it takes, in the words a patient would use. "Teeth straightening" means more to a nervous patient than "orthodontic treatment options".

If you can show fees, show them. Even "from" prices calm people down and spare your reception team calls that go nowhere. Mention payment plans or insurance if you take them.

A page just for new patients

New patients have practical questions. What should I bring? How long is the first visit? Is there a form to fill in first? What will it cost? Answer those on one page and link to it from the homepage. It's one of the easiest pages to write and one of the most useful.

Trust comes from real things

Use real photos of your team and your rooms. Stock photos of perfect smiles are easy to spot, and they make a practice feel generic. Add short bios with qualifications and, in the UK, each dentist's GDC registration number.

Reviews should be genuine and come from your Google profile or another platform patients can check for themselves. Never write or buy reviews. It's dishonest, and in many countries it's illegal.

In England, practices registered with the CQC must display their latest CQC rating on their website. The footer or the about page is a sensible place for it.

The technical side of the dental website checklist

Speed matters most on a phone with a weak signal. Google's "good" mark for the main content appearing is 2.5 seconds or less. I go into what slows sites down in why is my website slow?

Accessibility isn't optional either. Text should be readable without zooming and the contrast strong enough for older eyes. Forms need to work with a keyboard and a screen reader.

Add Dentist structured data with your address, hours and phone number, so search engines can read your details without guessing. And be careful with forms. A basic contact form is not the place for medical history. In the US, anything that collects health information should go through a HIPAA-compliant provider.

Advertising rules

Dental advertising is regulated almost everywhere. In the UK, follow the GDC's guidance on ethical advertising. In the UAE, healthcare advertising generally needs approval from the DHA, DoH or MOHAP, depending on the emirate. Wherever you are, avoid guarantees, misleading before-and-after photos and lines like "the best dentist in town". This is general information rather than legal advice, so check the details with your regulator.

If you want to see how I'd lay all this out, have a look at my family dental practice concept, a sample design for a fictional practice, or read about dental website design.
